About Us ¶

QGIS Cyprus gathers the Cypriot QGIS community of users and developers, spreading knowledge of QGIS through events, meetups, hack-days, workshops and seminars. We operate as an independent, volunteer-led, vendor-neutral community — open, educational and fun, while encouraging transparency, inclusion and the promotion of Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS).

Our History ¶

QGIS Cyprus was founded in 2019 by Marios Kyriakou, who initiated the establishment of a national QGIS community in Cyprus and created its initial public presence. Following the establishment of the initiative, George Christou played a key role in its early development by bringing together members of the Cyprus geospatial community and supporting the formation of its initial organisational structure. In 2019, the community also prepared a constitution and established a founding membership and initial organisational committee as part of an effort to register QGIS Cyprus as a scientific association in Cyprus. Although the registration was not completed, this process established the initial community and governance structure of QGIS Cyprus.

The community has maintained a public social-media presence since 2019, sharing QGIS-related news, activities, resources and events. QGIS Cyprus is now seeking official recognition by the QGIS Project Steering Committee (PSC) as the country-level QGIS User Group for Cyprus.

Purpose and Objectives ¶

• Promote the use and understanding of QGIS in Cyprus
• Support QGIS users, developers, researchers, professionals, educators, students and organisations
• Promote open-source geospatial software, open geospatial data, and open standards
• Facilitate knowledge exchange, cooperation, training, workshops, presentations, user meetings and community events
• Share QGIS-related projects, experience, case studies, information and educational material
• Encourage participation by the Cyprus community in the international QGIS project and related open-source geospatial initiatives
• Provide a national point of contact for the QGIS community in Cyprus

Governance ¶

QGIS Cyprus is governed by a five-member Coordinating Committee responsible for the strategic direction, coordination, representation and activities of the User Group. Committee members are elected by active members through a transparent, democratic process for a two-year term.

Coordinating Committee (2026) ¶

No company, university, public authority, organisation or individual exercises exclusive control over QGIS Cyprus. Following official recognition, active members will democratically nominate a QGIS.ORG Voting Member Representative on behalf of Cyprus.

Honorary Members ¶

QGIS Cyprus may recognise individuals as Honorary Members in acknowledgement of significant or long-standing contributions to QGIS Cyprus, the QGIS project, or the wider open-source geospatial community.

Honorary membership is a recognition of contribution and does not constitute an elected office or confer executive authority within the Coordinating Committee. Honorary Members may continue to support and advise the community and participate in its activities.

Our Community ¶

We welcome everyone interested in QGIS, from complete beginners to experienced professionals, including GIS professionals, environmental scientists, urban planners, researchers, students and hobbyists. Our community values:

• Learning: We support continuous learning and knowledge sharing

Get Involved ¶

We welcome everyone interested in QGIS to join and contribute. There are two primary ways you can help.

Contribute Content ¶

You can submit a Case Study, Tutorial or a Blog post for the user group website. We welcome all content focused on QGIS that is relevant for users in Cyprus. Post on our mailing list with a brief description of your idea to get started.

Volunteer for a Working Group ¶

You can also help with the running of the user group by volunteering for one of our working groups. We have people helping with the website, content, events, outreach and more. Write to us at qgis-cyprus@googlegroups.com with your area of interest and we’ll connect you with other volunteers.
